What is a Slide Out?
Slide outs are pretty popular in RVs, but they are much less common in tiny houses. There are a few reasons for this: they make the house heavier, they make the build more complicated, and there are a few issues with slide outs if you don’t use high quality material.
However, if you can successfully build a slide out in a tiny home, you will end up reaping awesome benefits. The extra space and ingenuity of a slide out can help you get the most out of tiny house living; with a simple slide out on one or both sides of your tiny house, you can give yourself tons of extra space out of nowhere. A tiny home with a slide out is great if you are looking for:
- A sleeping space that doesn’t utilize a loft
- Extra dining room or living space
- More overall space for the entire family

6 Awesome Examples of Tiny Homes with Slide Outs
1) The Ozark
The Ozark is your beginner’s look into tiny houses with slide-outs. This house sold by Tiny House Listings features a single side with a slide out, where a living room booth and table are set up.
The slide out comes out just about 36 inches, using very little 12-volt power despite its big size.

This non-lofted, single level tiny house is easy to tow and practical, making the feature an unexpected bonus to a house with a pretty conventional and standard design. You can find out more about the Ozark and how to buy it on Tiny House Listings.
2) The Aurora
Zero Squared is a popular Canadian design company that builds innovative and creative tiny houses, and you might know them from Tiny House Nation on Netflix. They specialize in tiny houses with unique designs, so of course they have a tiny house with slide-outs on both sides, known as the Aurora.
The Aurora offers more room than you could ever imagine in a tiny house due to its dual design on either side. While its regular travel size stands at the legal 8’6” width, when parked the slide outs can stretch the house’s width to a whopping 15’6”. That’s an extra 7 feet of space in a tiny house, so say goodbye to squeezing around in the tiny living sq ft of the kitchen!
In their design, the slides provide a hallway and living area in front of the living room, as well as enough space to fold out a full queen size murphy bed for the bedroom.
Have you ever seen so much space in a tiny house? And if you are settling down for more than a few days, this house also lets you fold out your own porch and stairs. How cool is that?
3) The VanGogh
Looking for something similar to the Aurora, but don’t need as much space? The VanGogh is another tiny house creation from Zero Squared, but instead of having a dual design, there is only a slide out on one side. This is great if you want the modern, wide feel of a tiny house without feeling like you are getting too much.
The VanGogh comes in a 28’ length version and a 30’ length version. At 30’, you have 403 sq ft or square feet of livable space with the loft, with the 8’6” width expanding to 12’ with the slides pulled out. Check out the floor plan below:
4) Mint Tiny Homes Double Slide Outs
In this tiny house design by Mint Tiny Homes, the home offers double slide outs similar to the Aurora. Interestingly, unlike the Aurora, this tiny house spaces its dual slide outs on the same side rather than opposite sides.
On one side you see a normal tiny house on wheels:
And on the other, you see both the slides built at the front and back of the opposite side:
So what does this look like on the inside? Inside the house, you have two areas with extra width. They use the first area for an extra nice living room space, as so:
And the second slide out space is used to extend a murphy bed built into the bedroom wall:
5) Ray McCue’s DIY Slide Out Tiny House
So far all of the tiny homes we’ve featured have come from tiny house building teams, which might make you feel that you can’t do this on your own. While it’s true that slide outs can be a bit difficult to build, that doesn’t mean you need a professional company to do it properly.
We can see this in one tiny house built by tiny house homeowner Ray McCue, which took him two years to build:
What’s so unique about his design is that it’s not just the side of the tiny house that comes out, but the gabled roof as well, as you can see more clearly from this angle:
This leaves him with a gorgeously wide interior that is spacious not just at eye level, but from floor to ceiling, perfect for any single individual, couple, or family:
6) The Slide Out Gooseneck Mega Tiny House
Everyone knows that when you want to go big with your tiny home, you opt for the gooseneck trailer. This is because the gooseneck naturally gives you extra space, simply by building over the gooseneck part of the trailer.
But this tiny home building company known as Tiny Idahomes asked themselves: how big can a big tiny house be? So they built a tiny home on a gooseneck trailer… and then put slide outs on the side. Check it out:
What you can’t see from the picture above is that the slide out design on the raised gooseneck level is actually done on both sides, giving the raised area a double slide out design. From the inside, this gives them tons of extra leg room for a nice raised living room area:
While it might seem slightly excessive, you can’t deny the fact that you rarely see tiny houses that look more spacious than this:
